Senator Merkley Marks Military Appreciation Month by Co-Sponsoring Legislation to Prevent Suicide Among Veterans

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Veteran suicides Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley visited Lines for Life on Friday to see its military helpline in action and met with veterans and veteran advocates to discuss how to stem the rising tide of suicide among veterans.

“Too many of our men and women in uniform are coming home from battle with less visible wounds – PTSD, traumatic brain injury and depression. But we’re not making the same kind of commitment to treating those wounds of war,” said Merkley.

Car Prowlers Steal Veteran`s Bronze Star and Other Awards

It would be greatly appreciated if the items were returned to the local Veteran that earned them.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - ACU Backpack Sometime during the night between Wednesday and Thursday, car prowlers struck near Tanner Creek Park in West Linn. The thieves made off with a backpack that was in the trunk of a car. The pack is an Army Combat Uniform (ACU)pattern. For those who don't know what that is, it is the camouflage of the United States Army. It had a patch on it that read "229 Training Brigade".

Inside this pack was a binder that contained photos, official documents, service awards, a letter from the President and a BRONZE STAR that was awarded to our victim on his last combat tour in Afghanistan.

Of Some 53,100 adults in 102 countries and territories around the world surveyed for the ADL Global 100: An Index of Anti-Semitism, 26% were found to be ‘deeply infected’ with ‘anti-Semitic attitudes.’

Our society with its fixation on the physical focuses on direct violence and ignores the structural and cultural. Our leaders know that making changes on those levels would threaten their whole system. But as radicals we focus on the structural and cultural because we know that change has to begin at the roots.

The New York Times printed several articles delineating the cruel consequences of battle and the worst features of inadequate or dangerous medical care of Veterans of current and previous wars.

Tigard Police Investigating Early Morning Shooting

Police say they are still gathering evidence and witness accounts.

(TIGARD) - Shooting investigation Tigard Police are presently investigating a reported shooting which occurred early this morning at The Birches Apartments located 11495 SW Greenburg Rd in Tigard.

Witness statements indicate at about 1:10 a.m. while inside an apartment unit, a male in his 20s was shot.

(WASHINGTON DC) - Dr. Alison Des Forges Dr. Alison Des Forges, born in Schenectady, New York, in 1942, began studying Rwanda as a student and dedicated her life and work to understanding the country as well as exposing the serial abuses suffered by its people with the goal of helping to bring about change in the country. Tragically, she died in the crash of Flight 3407 from Newark to Buffalo on February 12, 2009 and the age of 66.

Des Forges was a senior adviser to Human Rights Watch's Africa division for almost two decades and she dedicated her life to working on Rwanda.
