(YORKSHIRE, UK) - Salem-News.com Human Rights Ambassador William Nicholas Gomes with other Campaigners at the 2013 Fairtrade Yorkshire Conference Fairtrade campaigners from across Yorkshire gathered this past weekend at Leeds University for the Fairtrade Yorkshire Campaigners’ Forum.

The one-day event was an opportunity for networking, training and learning from each other, and also elected our first regional representative to the Fairtrade Foundation’s National Campaigner Committee.

Telephone Scams See Surge

Anyone receiving a suspicious telephone call and suspects similar fraud, should notify PGE at 1-800-542-8818 and the police.

(TIGARD OR) - Scam alert Tigard Police are cautioning both businesses and residents regarding a telephone scam which appears to be widespread in the metro area. Tigard Police have taken calls from both business owners and residential customers of PGE.

Almost verbatim, the caller advises the potential victim that a new "smart meter" needs to be installed immediately or power will be shut-off.

Whale Carcass Washes Ashore

Tampering with or collecting pieces from a dead whale is prohibited by federal law.

(BROOKINGS OR) - Dead whale A 40' sperm whale carcass washed ashore near Chetco Point in Curry County early in the morning on June 27.

The whale is already heavily decomposed and resting on a beach where the sand is shallow, so no attempt will be made to bury it.

Memorial Scheduled for `Baby Precious`

Crime Stoppers has received numerous tips about the case but none of them have led to the identification of the baby's mother or how the baby came to be at the recycling center.

(PORTLAND OR) - Baby Precious A memorial celebration for "Baby Precious" has been scheduled for June 28, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. The memorial will be held at the Maranatha Church, located at 4222 Northeast 12th Avenue. An internment will follow at Riverveiw Cemetery, located at 0300 Southwest Taylors Ferry Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations of new baby items or diapers will be accepted.

The DOMA decision is a step in the right direction, but leaves same-sex couples in 43 states without a right to marry and ineligible for federal benefits.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Women celebrate gay marriage law The Supreme Court in United States v. Windsor ruled that Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by the states, is unconstitutional.

Adding California after the Hollingsworth v. Perry decision, twelve states now allow same-sex marriages and these couples are now eligible for federal benefits.
