Disabled Woman Pulled From House FireSalem-News.comA pet dog and two cats survived, but a third cat perished in the fire.
(SALEM) - Salem Fire Department crews was dispatched to a report of a house fire located at 182 Idell Ct. SE Thursday at 10:48 AM. Captain Dave Cruthers reported that as the Engine arrived, firefighters could see a woman on the floor inside the front door. He says they immediately went into a rescue mode. A second alarm was called to the single-family residence at 10:51 AM sending additional resources. The woman was transported to Salem Hospital for observation. Fire Spokesperson Chris Riffle says firefighters reported heavy smoke showing from the home as they arrived. "The fire, which began in the kitchen, rolled across the ceiling and extended up and into the attic space. It took firefighters about 15 minutes to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be from improper discarding of burning materials." She says the home suffered smoke damage throughout; the loss is estimated at $150,000. One Salem firefighter was reported injured in the fire and transported to Salem Hospital. Riffle says it was a muscle strain, the firefighter was treated and released. The 42-year old disabled woman was home alone when she noticed smoke coming from the kitchen pantry area and heard the smoke alarm. John and Julie Cook have rented their home for about 12 years and do not have renters insurance. Their pet dog, and two cats survived the fire, but a third cat perished in the fire. The Red Cross was called to offer assistance to the couple.
