Expect Winter Driving Conditions This Weekend

Salem-News.com

(SALEM) - Forecasters are calling for as much as three feet of snow in various parts of the Cascades over the Easter weekend. Winter driving conditions should be expected by anyone planning to travel through the Cascades, officials with the Department of Transportation say ice and snow could lead to hazardous travel.

ODOT says you should carry chains and be prepared to use them The studded tire season ended March 31st, so it is currently illegal to use studded tires in Oregon. The fine is about $150. But travelers can always use chains, which studies show to be as effective as, or more effective, than studded tires in most driving conditions. Studded tires cause about $40 million in damage to Oregon roads each year. Spring snowstorm driving tips: `In Oregon, winter isn`t over until it`s summer!"

  • Be prepared! Spring storms are infamous for rapidly changing conditions
  • Slow down. Do not drive faster than your vision permits
  • Increase following distance to ensure enough reaction time and stopping distance
  • Turn on your lights so other drivers can better notice your vehicle
  • Use windshield wipers and the defroster, as needed, to maximize your ability to see
  • Be ready for emergency stops by other vehicles
  • Use the right edge of the road or roadside reflectors as a guide
  • Start with a full tank of fuel, and carry a winter survival kit that includes food and water
  • Signal early and brake gently

Whenever road closures occur, ODOT updates the travel information web site www.tripcheck.com and the 511 travel information service. Updates are added in real time as conditions change or new information becomes available. Please consult these information sources before you travel.
