(GALVESTON, TX) - The National Weather Service is keeping a close eye on a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico as it nears the lower Texas and Mexico coast.

The NWS says rainfall and thunderstorms associated with tropical depression five will begin to affect the area tonight.

On Thursday, the storm is expected to make landfall somewhere between the mouth of the Rio Grande and Corpus Christi, and is expected to bring 3 to 5 inches of rain.

The NWS says significant flooding problems are possible and flood watches may be required for a portion of southeast Texas.

The greatest threat for flooding appears to be over Jackson, Matagorda, Brazoria, Wharton, and Fort Bend Counties.
