Albany Police Offering Fall Citizens’ Academy

The academy is designed to promote awareness and understanding of the police department’s role in the community and the criminal justice system, and to educate citizens about its daily function and operation.

(ALBANY) - The Albany Police Department is accepting applications for its fall Citizens’ Academy.

The academy will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 PM, Tuesday evenings from Sept. 5th to Nov. 21st at Central Willamette Community Credit Union.

Two Saturday classes are also planned.

The academy is free to Albany residents of all backgrounds and occupations who are 18 or older and pass a criminal background check.

Thirty citizens will be selected to attend 36 hours of interactive classroom and “hands-on” instruction.

Topics include police officer selection, training and duties; investigation skills; tactical operations; use of force and defensive tactics; canine procedures; firearms use; narcotics investigations; crime scene processing; and crime prevention.

Academy applications can be obtained at the Albany Police Department, 1117 Jackson St. S.E., or at www.ci.albany.or.us/police.

Space is limited, and applications must be returned no later than 5:00 PM Aug. 25th.

Three credit hours, plus tuition costs, are available through LBCC upon successful completion of the academy.
