Vernonia Flood Victims Low on Heat

The residents there need help to stay warm.

(VERNONIA, Ore.) - Flood victims in the Vernonia area are in dire need of heat sources. The winter storm that ravaged the area over the past week left many families without operational electric or natural gas heat sources. The recent drop in temperature has literally left people out in the cold.

"The local hospital is experiencing an increase in flood victims that have endured the past few days of sub freezing temperatures and we need to get heating supplies to them," says Oregon State Fire Marshal Incident Commander Taylor Robertson.

The Victims Assistance volunteers are requesting that safe space heaters and dry firewood be donated to the Vernonia flood victims. Space heaters can be dropped off at the Vernonia Distribution Center which is located at the corner of Bridge and Weed (across from City Hall). Firewood should be delivered to the west side of Weed Avenue across from City Hall.

Other supplies needed by the community include building supplies (sheetrock, 2x4's, plumbing supplies, carpet and padding, insulation, 3/4 minus gravel) clothing and food. Financial donations can be made to the Columbia County Unmet Needs for Assistance through Wauna Federal Credit Union by calling (503) 429-8031.
