(BROOKINGS, Ore.) - Oregon State Police and the the Curry County Sheriff's Office arrested a Brookings, Oregon area man on charges related to a fatal hit and run crash Monday morning, December 10th, that left an adult man dead on Highway 101 between Gold Beach and Brookings.

A citizen's tip based on media coverage led investigators to the involved vehicle and driver. The victim's name is still withheld pending next of kin notification.

25-year old jeremy Brian Scott of Brookings was taken into custody by Oregon State Police and Curry County Sheriff's Office for Criminally Negligent Homicide, Felony Hit & Run, and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance - Methamphetamine.

Monday at approximately 10:20 AM, a report was received of a deceased male on Highway 101 near milepost 349 near the Whale's Head Beach Resort.

Police say the victim, who is identified as a transient 24-year old male, was seen by a Curry County Sheriff's Office deputy pushing a shopping cart in the area about 20 minutes earlier.

Roadway evidence indicated the victim was hit by a southbound vehicle. The investigation indicated the vehicle may be blue, but they could not tell the make or model though they knew that it should have extensive front damage including broken lens covers and a broken headlight. The hit and run vehicle was believed to be traveling on Highway 101, Highway 199, or secondary coastal roads in southern Oregon or northern California.

Police and area emergency responders were on scene investigating this incident Monday until about 2:00 PM. All lanes were closed for about 30 minutes and then traffic was shuttled through the area using the northbound lane.

Oregon State Police say they received that citizen's tip on December 10th 2007 at approximately 10:30 PM. A person reported that their neighbor's vehicle had fresh front collision damage consistent with what media reports had described, regarding that morning's fatal hit and run crash that killed a pedestrian.

A Curry County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to the location on Winchuck River Road about 22 miles south of the crash scene. The deputy notified Oregon State Police after confirming the fresh crash damage and investigators responded to the address.

The vehicle was subsequently seized and Scott, whose driving privileges are suspended, was taken into custody following additional investigation. Police say the drug-related charge stemmed from a small amount of methamphetamine found on the suspect when he was being detained.

Also, to the editor, I take a it as a huge sign of disrespect to see my name not properly capitalized.... Who proofread this anyways?

Editor: Comments are not proofed, they are submitted as they arrive, nothing personal, just the way it is done.  So what is the status of this right now?

Felony murder 1 rule IMHO... stick a needle in his arm and be done with the risk creating scumbag. Ah well...

Neal Feldman December 13, 2007 2:58 pm (Pacific time)

Too bad they could not have charged Sean Lee Hagen with the same charges. This guy needs to get a needle in his arm (so does Hagen for that matter). These scumbags are a deadly threat to us all and in our own self defense we need to be protected from them. And clowns like this guy will offend, and likely kill, again. Look at the record of Sean Lee Hagen as an example. SIXTEEN suspensions against a license he has never had. Ah well...
