Bruins Climb Two Spots in Polls, Show Up in NCAA National Statistics

(NEWBERG, Ore.) - In the midst of a 23-day stretch without a game, the George Fox University Bruins nevertheless climbed two spots in both of this week’s NCAA Division III women’s basketball national polls, and also showed up prominently in the first national statistics of the season posted on the NCAA website.

Despite not playing since Dec. 4, the 6-2 Bruins climbed from 15th with 85 points to 13th with 86 points in the fourth poll of the season by the USA Today / ESPN / Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, released on Dec. 14. In the third in-season D3hoops.com poll, the Bruins rose from 17th with 209 points to 15th with 248 points.

Amherst College (10-0) remained No. 1 in both polls, as the Lord Jeffs have been all season ... Among other NWC teams, the University of Puget Sound was 21st with 91 points in the D3hoops.com poll and listed among “others receiving votes” with one point in the WBCA poll, while Whitman College was among “others” in both polls, with two points in D3hoops.com and seven in the WBCA list ...

NCAA STATS: Through games of Dec. 12, George Fox was ranked 7th nationally in blocked shots per game (6.4), 42nd in field goal percentage defense (.330), 43rd in field goal percentage (.431), 44th in assists per game (16.3), and 49th in rebound margin (+7.3) ... Center Hannah Munger ranked 7th in blocked shots per game (3.9), 32nd in field goal percentage (.554), and 40th in rebounds per game (11.0) ... Wing Keisha Gordon ranked 49th in steals per game (3.4) ...

NEXT: The Bruins will meet Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Monday, Dec. 27, at 5:00 p.m. in the opening round of the Surf ‘n Slam Classic, hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University, in San Diego, Calif. The Bruins will take on St. Mary’s College of Indiana the next day at 3:00 p.m., have an off-day, then play a third game against an opponent and at a time to be determined on Thursday, Dec. 30. There are six teams in the tournament, divided into two pools, with the finish of each team in each pool determining its final-round matchup.
