Corrections Deputy Pleads Guilty to Illegal Possession of a Stun Device

The case could end with termination of the employee.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Sheriff Daniel Staton and Chief Deputy Carol Hasler received notice today that a Correction Deputy named Steven Douglas Cowles, pled guilty to illegal possession of a Stun Device. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Internal Investigation primary assessment will begin Monday January 4, 2010, according to Lt. Mary Lindstrand, Public Information Officer with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

"Following the primary assessment, a full internal investigation will occur and conclude with appropriate discipline," Lindstrand said.

The discipline range is based upon MCSO's internal rules including, but not limited to, ‘conduct conforming to the law' and could end with termination of the employee.

There is no such statute, what he plead guilty to was 163.212 Unlawful use of an electrical stun gun, tear gas or mace in the second degree, a Class A Misdemeanor

PORTLAND — A Multnomah County corrections deputy has been sentenced to two years probation after Tasering a man at a strip club a block down from the Sheriff’s office in June. Steven Douglas Cowles says a man was threatening a stripper who he has known for a long time. As part of his probation, the 45-year-old Cowles has agreed to enroll in an alcohol evaluation program and not drink or visit bars. Cowles was off-duty and drinking when he fired the stun gun. Is there any way to find out why this possession was illegal? I thought stun guns were legal weapons for the police to possess?
