(KEIZER) - Chuck Lee, Keizer City Councilor and President of Blanchet Catholic School, filed Monday for the Zone 6 Director position for the Salem-Keizer School Board, which will be up for election on May 15th.

Lee also submitted his resignation to the Keizer City Council after six years of service.

“I am excited for the opportunity to continue serving children in our community by enhancing our public schools,” said Lee.

“Keizer deserves a board member who will be an active voice in standing up for our schools and I hope to do that.”

Lee would replace Mike Basinger, who has decided not to run for re-election.

Basinger is supporting Lee’s bid for School Board.

“Chuck Lee’s extensive experience in education, his community involvement and his experience in local government make him an ideal school board candidate,” said Basinger.

Lee has also received the public support of all of his colleagues on the Keizer City Council, including Mayor Lore Christopher.

“Although he will be missed on City Council, he will be an informed, active voice for Keizer on the Salem-Keizer School Board,” said Christopher.

“Chuck has been very active in the community and I am confident he will continue to be active in the community as our school board representative.”

Lee has been a long-time advocate of strong public schools.

He began his education career as a public school teacher prior to becoming a private school administrator.

“I want to work hard to improve our public schools by working for stable funding, health insurance pools, and enhanced early childhood education programs,” said Lee.

Lee resigned by a written letter to the Mayor and City Council at noon Monday and will be focusing all of his efforts to run a winning campaign and educate himself on important school board issues.

“After considering the situation, I feel that it is in the best interest of the city for me to resign,” said Lee. “The new councilor will be able to participate in the budget process and civic center planning as soon as possible.”

Lee is a two-term city councilor in Keizer and President of Blanchet Catholic School in Salem.

Lee serves on the No Meth – Not in My Neighborhood Task Force and the Marion County Children & Families Commission.

He has been a teacher and education administrator for over 30 years.
