California Leaning Toward Clinton in Early CountsSalem-News.comCalifornia is leaning toward Clinton, and Republican contender John McCain is hoping this day will see Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee slip out of the race.
(SALEM, Ore.) - Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were pulling an equal share of states in this "Super Tuesday" primary election. California results as of a few minutes ago show a 2% return with Clinton winning at 57%, up 25 points from Obama. 49% of white voters and 81% black voters are backing Obama. But 73% of Asian voters and 66% of the Latino vote is backing Clinton. Early returns showed Obama winning seven states while Clinton had six in the early returns. Obama is the projected winner in Minnesota, Connecticut, Kansas, North Dakota, Colorado, Idaho, Alabama, Delaware, Illinois, Georgia. 118 delegates have pledged support for Obama as well as 106 superdelegates. Clinton's victories so far include Oklahoma, Arizona, Tennessee, Arkansas, Massachusetts, New Jersey and her adopted state of New York. Clinton has 106 pledged delegates and 193 superdelegates. Republican contender John McCain is hoping this day will see Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee slip out of the race and his victories in Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Illinois and Oklahoma may help that vision take shape. Mike Huckabee's victories tonight include Alabama, Arkansas and West Virginia. Huckabee had aimed for a strong showing in the South with its concentration of evangelical Christians. Romney won in Massachusetts, where he served as governor, and in Utah, where he ran the 2002 winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
