Double Fatal Traffic Crash East of Newport OregonSalem-News.comA Subaru crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with an eastbound pickup occupied by two people.
(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Two people died and a third person was injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle head-on crash on Highway 20 about five miles east of Newport. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation, including confirmation of victims and completion of next of kin notification. No names will be released until Friday. Officials say that February 11, 2010 at approximately 4:55 p.m. a Subaru Forester driven by an adult female was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 5 when, for an undetermined reason, it crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with an eastbound Ford Ranger pickup occupied by two people. After impact, the vehicles came to rest in the eastbound lane. Both occupants in the pickup, an adult male and adult female, were pronounced deceased at the scene. The Subaru's driver was transported by Pac West ambulance to Newport Hospital and reportedly has been transferred to an unknown Portland area hospital. OSP troopers from the Newport Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Toledo Police Department, Toledo Fire Department, and ODOT assisted at the scene. Highway 20 was closed about three hours with a detour established. SOURCE: Oregon State Police
