(KEIZER) - Units of the Keizer Fire District responded to the report of a house fire shortly after 2:30 AM on Thursday. First arriving units reported seeing a large amount of fire coming from the garage and two cars parked in the driveway also burning. The fire was in a single family residence located at 3723 Shady Ct. NE. The home is owned by Donna M. Salata who resides in the residence with Ed McLaughlin. Salata reported that she was awakened by a loud explosion. She said that she initially though that a car had hit the residence. After awakening McLaughlin the couple evacuated the home and reported seeing their garage door blown out with flames shooting from the garage. Shortly after they had evacuated the residence, they observed the two cars parked in the driveway burst into flames. Firefighters reported hearing three other explosions while fighting the blaze. The fire destroyed the garage of the residence and damaged the utility room of the structure. The rest of the home suffered heavy smoke damage. All of the contents of the garage, including several motorcycles were destroyed by the fire. The fire call was received at 2:38 AM. The first units arrived at 2:43 AM and the fire was declared under control at 3:05 AM. Three engines, one ladder truck, 2 ambulances and a Duty Chief vehicle and 25 firefighters responded to the incident. Marion County Fire District #1 and the Salem Fire Department assisted the Keizer Fire District in fighting the fire. No injuries were reported in the incident. Fire officials reported that the home did have working smoke alarms. Fire investigators have determined that the fire started in the garage in the area of a workbench and believe an electrical outlet may have shorted out causing sparks to ignite combustible material on the work bench. Damage was estimated to be $150,000 to the home and its contents.
