Be Aware! Icy Road Conditions Being Reported Throughout Mid-ValleySalem-News.comFor the latest Oregon travel conditions call 5-1-1.
(SALEM) - The Oregon Department of Transportation is urging residents in the central and southern Willamette Valley to avoid travel Thursday morning unless absolutely necessary due to icy conditions on highways throughout the region. Approximately 3 to 4 inches of snow fell in the Willamette Valley and along the Oregon coast overnight. The snow is ahead of an Arctic cold front that is expected to bring clear skies and freezing temperatures, which will solidify the snow and exacerbate the already slick roads. Black ice has caused multiple crashes and sent vehicles sliding off Interstate 5 between Cottage Grove and Albany. Oregon State Police are describing this 50-mile section of the freeway as a “skating rink.” Snow is currently falling on the North Coast between Newport and Cannon Beach. The National Weather Service is expecting 1 to 3 inches of snow this morning along the Oregon coast. ODOT crews have been working overnight to keep highways clear, alternating between plowing, sanding and applying de-icer. OSP and Salem police say there have been reports of black ice throught the Salem-area. If you must drive in the snow, please slow down and allow extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you.
