(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon State Police, with the assistance of local agencies, is investigating a fatal vehicle/pedestrian crash northbound on Interstate 5 just north of Market Street in Salem. OSP Sergeant Dale Young says that Friday night around 7:45 PM, the victim, a white male adult, was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near milepost 258 on foot from the center median to the eastbound shoulder. "A 2008 Toyota Tundra pickup driven by a 40-year old male was northbound in the center lane when the driver saw the pedestrian and veered to the far right lane in attempt to avoid the pedestrian but struck the victim. A second vehicle ran over the victim after the initial collision." The victim, tentatively identified as a 54-year old male, was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has been tentatively identified but his name is withheld pending positive identification and next of kin notification. The names of the other involved drivers will be released Saturday. Oregon State Police troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Salem Fire Department, ODOT and local emergency responders are assisting at the scene. One lane is getting through the area and all lanes may be reopened around midnight. Young says no other information will be released tonight. Just two nights ago, police investigated a fatal vehicle versus pedestrian crash on I-5 in Salem, south of this location at Kuebler. Related
