Crash on I-5 Leaves Keizer Woman Fatally InjuredSalem-News.comTwo small children survived, but the 19-year old woman driving the van has died from her injuries.
(ALBANY, Ore.) - A 19-year old Keizer woman died from injuries suffered in a two vehicle crash July 2nd, on Interstate 5 about ten miles south of Albany. The Lane County Medical Examiner has notified Oregon State Police that Alicia D. Stefanek of Keizer, died July 3rd from injuries sustained in the crash. On July 2nd at approximately 2:14 PM, a 1991 GMC Safari van driven by Ms. Stefanek was southbound in the left lane of Interstate 5 near milepost 223, when police say it drifted off the roadway and crossed through the median. The van crashed into the left side of a northbound 1992 Kenworth truck towing a box semi-trailer loaded with classic cars. After impact, the van spun around and came to a stop on its wheels in the median. Ms. Stefanek was extricated by personnel from Halsey and Tangent fire departments and Albany area medics. She was seriously injured and transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene where she died the next day. Two van child passengers, ages 1 and 2, were transported by ambulance to a Corvallis area hospital with minor injuries. The truck's driver, 40-year old Michael Ceravolo of Florida was not injured. ODOT closed down the two northbound lanes onto Highway 99E due to a large diesel spill from a fuel tank, which was cleaned up by ODOT and Northwest Firefighters. Police were unable to determine if seat belts and other safety restraints were used.
