(FLORENCE, Ore.) - Oregon State Police detectives are investigating the death of a Eugene-area man following a shooting incident Sunday evening at Munsel Lake near Florence. No one has been arrested. Police say that Sunday at pproximately 9:30 PM, a group of four friends had just returned in a small boat to a private dock on Munsel Lake after an evening of fishing and shooting. The four friends were in separated groups of two walking across the dock and up a path towards a private residence located in the area of Martin Road near Munsel Lake Road. The victim, 21-year old Weston Schoener of Eugene, was walking with a friend on the dock when a small caliber rifle being carried by another friend discharged, striking him once in the waistline. Oregon State Police troopers from the Florence work site responded with emergency medical personnel from Western Lane Ambulance. When troopers arrived, Mr. Schoener's friends were administering first aid. Troopers secured the scene and firearms so medical personnel could be brought in to continue aid. Mr. Schoener was transported to Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence where he died later during surgery. OSP detectives from the Springfield Area Command office responded to the scene and conducted initial interviews. The investigation is continuing in conjunction with the Lane County District Attorney's Office. Related
