(SALEM, Ore.) - When we grow up we are taught the difference between right and wrong. Well before reaching adulthood, we are supposed to have a sound understanding of the bottom line, and a reasonable appreciation for the fact that mistakes carry consequences.

But moral decay, divisiveness and polarity are the order of the day in 2007. As a society, it seems like we no longer aspire to be chivalrous. Instead we go for the most outrageous, the most shocking, the most revealing, and the least-clothed.

And networks give time to a media whore who taunts people over the death of their child, calls the widows of 9/11 firemen in New York "Greedy Witches", and states on national television that she hopes a leading politician will die in a terrorist attack.

It brings us to that rotten speck on the TV screen; a tortured soul called Ann Coulter, "Nazi Bitch" as she is known on countless Websites, and she brings us all a particular kind of shame that can't be contained in the continental United States.

The news in recent weeks has been packed with death and murder and tragedy. The rate of soldiers dying in Iraq is climbing, murders and random crimes are growing, and the national media's sense of self regulation is nowhere to be seen.

When students are gunned down on a college campus; shot dead, we cry as a national family. But Ann Coulter can verbalize her wishes for the murder of a high level public official, John Edwards, and FOX News goes on writing her paychecks.

Do Coulter supporters want the same threats to be leveled at politicians they support? If it isn't OK to scream fire in a theater, then how does this twisted person get away with this garbage?

Well, that's simple... The wicked witch of the far right and FOX News is willing to exploit her good figure and she has long blonde hair. Sorry, but Coulter is the epitome of people in TV news that only exist because of their appearance. If she was homely and overweight, would she have this stage?

Somebody has to put things into perspective, because the luxury ride of American supremacy is over, and we have pulled out all the stops that once kept people like Coulter in better places, like jail. A time period when people felt compelled to be respectful and decent is growing smaller in the rear view mirror.

And it is more than a theory that world admiration for the United States has flown out the door, and now other nations are watching a diabolical pawn named Coulter getting what seems to be increasing time on the air.

In the two featured video clips, you can see Coulter at her worst, or at least what we hope is her worst.

She is a modern day incarnation of Jane Fonda's personality during the Vietnam War, a blasted traitor with disregard for the bond that is supposed to unite all Americans.

And that illustrates the most important thing that we all should feel obligated to remember; that this is not about right and left folks, it is about right and wrong.

It's also about the increasingly unethical behavior of media bullies who distance themselves farther from the truth, or any concern for Americans, with each passing day.

A former employer of Coulter's, Jonah Goldberg with National Review Online, described what it was like to work with her, "she behaved with a total lack of professionalism, friendship, and loyalty".

USA Today gave her the boot shortly after hiring her to cover the 2004 Democratic National Convention. She wrote one article that began, "Here at the Spawn of Satan convention in Boston..."

Some suggest that Coulter is similar in many respects to members of the Westboro Baptist Church out of Topeka, Kansas. They are known for their anti-gay protests and taunts of grieving family members at military funerals.

The bizarre and hateful church group and Coulter have become the two most covered national phenomena's that fully go for the throat of people when they have to bury their own children.

The Westboro Baptist Church does it so they can sue governments that allow them to be assaulted while they assert their civil rights.

Coulter does it for ratings and money.

One primary focus of Coulter's bad energy has been Senator John Edwards. In the past she has called him "faggot", now she says on national television that she hopes he is assassinated by terrorists. Here is the clip where she uses the reference "faggot".

This week on MSNBC's "Hardball," Elizabeth Edwards called in to the show to ask Coulter to stop making personal attacks on her husband, Democratic Presidential Candidate John Edwards.

She also called Coulter out for the tormenting remarks she made previously made about John Edwards having placed a bumper sticker on his car referencing his dead son.

"You had a column a number of years ago which made fun of Charlie Dean's death and suggested that my husband had a bumper sticker on his car that said 'ask me about my dead son.'"

Coulter interrupted her at that point and said, "That was three years ago".

Then as Mrs. Edwards tried to talk to Coulter about her dead son, a heckler yelled from the crowd, "Why isn't John Edwards making this call?" which Coulter then parroted as a response instead of addressing her cruel error. Watch the third video clip below:

It was a classic extension of the "sex sells" world that she hails from. Others call it Hollywood. Wear a low cut blouse and rely on a crowd heckler for your dialog on national TV, what a lousy act Ann Coulter is.

It is reported that response on MSNBC's political blog Wednesday was so heavy it crashed the server. People are angry and Coulter's presence on national TV is visible far outside our national borders.

In strange irony, the problems between Coulter's ability to remain decent in the TV industry and the Edwards family, are an unseen benefit for his presidential candidacy.

Elizabeth Edwards sent an e-mail to supporters Wednesday morning that included a clip of their exchange and a donation request. Though they declined to name the total, the campaign said they raised more money this week than from any previous e-mail campaign.

"I think when they engage in these attacks and use the language of hate, it's very important to stand up,'" Edwards said. "What happens if you are silent when this kind of hateful language is used - not just by her, but by anyone - hate gets a foothold."

Edwards pointed out that Coulter's attacks haven't been limited to him, but also included his rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination. Coulter has made fun of Hillary Rodham Clinton's legs and compared Barack Obama to terrorists because his middle name is Hussein.

"What she said about Senator Clinton and Senator Obama is outrageous,'' Edwards stated Wednesday. ``And somebody has to stand up when she makes these kind of attacks."

People seem to be waking up to the fact that we all have a lot in common in this country. We may have different backgrounds, but we are supposed to have a red white and blue bond, and it doesn't take a genius to spot a bad apple on a tree. Corporations supporting Coulter need to withdraw their support. People can call Crown Forum Publishing and Random House and tell them to drop their contract with Coulter.

Remember the censorship that has gone on in recent years over people who criticize the Bush Administration; the Dixie Chicks, Bill Mahr being canned from TV because he suggested that the terrorists who took their own lives to kill Americans were not cowards, and who can forget the whole country coming unglued over Janet Jackson's nipple making national airwaves.

With respect to Coulter's criminal statements about seeing Edwards die at the hands of terrorists; in all my life, I have never seen such contradictions.

Talk about losing your moral compass.

Above all, FOX News is behind the rise of Coulter's attacks on our lingering decency. I have no doubt that the day will come when lies and blatant inaccuracy in news can again be sanctioned and at least disciplined. Even with public officials, there is a line drawn long ago in the sand, and I predict that Coulter is eventually going to be slammed by a huge wave that will sweep her kind out to sea forever.

Your video of Coulter saying that next time she will just say she wishes Edwards was killed in a terrorist assassination plot is misleading. She had been talking about a double-standard, as a liberal had recently said (on stage at a concert) that he wished Bush was killed in a terrorists assassination plot. But you're a liberal, so I guess it's whatever it takes to make people think conservatives are evil, right?

About that reference to Bill Maher, here's what Maher actually said:"BILL MAHER, HOST, HBO'S "REAL TIME": I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power people wouldn't be dying needlessly tomorrow. If he did die, other people — more people would live. That's a fact." Maher was talking about a free speech issue--removal of other people's posts on Ariana Huffington's site. Do you REALLY think that's the same thing as saying Cheney should be assassinated? As usual Coulter just twists the words of others to justify her own hateful comments.

This column is a simple lie, and it is fooling simple people. Coulter didn't call for assasination attempts on Edwards, as anyone with a modicum of intelligence can discern. If Ann Coulter was homely and fat (like say... Rosie O'Donnell) it would make no difference at all. People listen to her because they agree with what she says. Taking her statements all out of context only makes you look foolish.

Why is it that the people on the fringes of political ideology are so angry. Everyone has some legitimacy to what they think and say, but people like Ann and Rush, and I am sure there are some on the left as well, just seem so angry and negative. Years ago I watched Rush Limbaugh a couple of times, and I thought that he had some right on his side for some of his comments (no pun intended) but the whole monolog was couched in an overwhelming anger that seemed to permiate everything he said. Ann seems very much to be cut form the same mold. I wonder if these people were very unpopular in middle school and have never gotten over the anger and frustration of that experience. I would really love to see FCC regulations that required a level of review of what reporters said on TV. Mark, One of the recent somewhat heated stories I wrote earlier this month was about how the Oregon Guard soldiers I was embedded with in Afghanistan last year, were being corralled behind a barbed wire fence at Fort Carson, Colorado as a welcome home present on their return from the war.

This story is an example of me sticking up for my Oregon brothers, and being branded as a liberal by news readers because I dared to criticize the Army's wisdom in treating guard soldiers, war veterans, like animals.

Then this story about how our country is taking trusty AK-47's away from Afghan and Iraqi soldiers and giving them our complicated and sanitation sensitive M-16 saw me branded as a liberal again. I guess the assertion that I drop to the level of the accused may be true, but it is hard to resist when faced with things like Coulter. Many of us believe her statements soil our reputation as a country, one that many of us still believe strongly in for all the good things we have done.

I also note that you and others apparently choose to overlook the Jane Fonda correlation; I cite that again as proof that this is not about politics, it is about decency or a lack of it, in media.

An Coulter needs to make these kinds of comments so she can keep her face and name in the news. If she truly discussed the issues intelligently and with civility, no one would know who she is because she doesn't have much of anything to say. She markets herself very effectively in this regard. The question is, how much longer does she have in the limelight? Maybe not much longer because her schtick seems to be wearing thin.

Tim King (editorialist), I'm wondering when you'll write an article entitled "Rosie: When Does This Crap End". If you're so (rightly) upset at this age's uncivil discourse you'd be better to level your writing against ALL offenders -- not just those with whom you disagree politically. If your beef is the "crap" that's being spewed these days, then harp on that. You lose credibility when you criticize the state of "moral decay" and "polarization" yet succumb to those very traits yourself in your article ("Nazi bitch", "media whore", etc) and with no mention of the others like Rosie and Maher that are in exactly the same boat as is Coulter.

The thing that amazes me is that there are a variety of quality debates that take place on PBS, NPR, and CSPAN that very few watch or listen to. In these forums, they actually have experts with real analysis who respect one another. But rational debate of real issues doesn't attract crowds and people are disinterested in discussions that require prior knowledge about economics, history, political science, etc. Instead, they want to hear somebody with an appearance of education call somebody they don't like a "faggot." The word "sanctioned" in the last paragraph, is misused. To "sanction" is to "to give effective or authoritative approval or consent to".

This looks like its clearly labeled as an editorial story, so why does every one think Tim should have danced around his take on this venomous mouthpiece? He can say what he wants, just like you fools who think it's justified to defend her only in relation to the one remark vs. Mahr's remark. It is definitely time for more civility in the public discourse in America. The political left and the political right in America are not enemies--they are adversaries. Let's all start supporting civility and mutual respect and stop giving air time to those who prey on our base emotions--no matter what their political preferences.

Tim King is guilty of severely mutilating the context of everything he is complaining about. He started with a conclusion and twisted everything completely out of context. Ann Coulter expresses a mainstream viewpoint.....if this were NAZI Germany. She is a fringe element, much like Michael Moore. i am a democrat, actively serving in the national guard with a short tour in iraq. i love my country. period. i chose to set aside the liberty of deciding individally how i serve because it is more important to me that i serve. i set aside political preferences that are quite secondary to my responsibility to my comrades in arms. it is reprehensible that a party would foist these fetid rants and diatribes upon the public and then have the audacity to maintain their stance that it is comedy. it is not and none of the validated vapidly vain who have found a home in the nest of miscreants perceive it as humor. it is the personification of the utter contempt the previously marginalized have for whichever aspect of our nation they personally despise. there is no hate within the republican party for any group of people in the world that comes close to their blatant hatred for their domestic political adversaries. it is insulting, disgraceful and dishonorable.

So she said in jest, "I guess I'll just have to wish Edwards is killed in a terrorist bombing" which is EXACTLY what the liberal said. I don't recall Tim King saying THAT was totally out of line. I don't recall the left wing crying foul at wishing our VP had died in a near miss with a terrorist bombing. If not for hypocrisy, their would be no Democrat party. Now, I am no Coulter fan. But on this topic, my analysis is correct. The interpretation that she wished Edwards were assassinated is categorically incorrect. That some people seem to misinterpret what she said probably relates to the fact that she has bashed Edwards at other times. But this was not one of those times.

Aside from how leftists don't seem to understand the trope known as "hyperbole," the full quote about death by terrorism is a critique by way of reductio ad absurdum, not a remark advocating such. The idiocy of those who don't understand reductios is something to behold...

Well, so far the most articulate, well-reasoned, level-headed, and cogent comment posted here so far has been that of Ann Coulter's! Love her or hate her, she's not dumb or inarticulate or any of the other choice adjectives used to describe her. She can be insufferable, and she does have rather annoying mannerisms, but I hardly think she's deserving of being doused in petrol and lit up like a roman candle, as so many here would seem to suggest. I'm not a particular fan of hers (I think she tends to engage in baiting over honest discourse), but I like to think I can disagree without being disagreeable, and ultimately unless we can all agree on THAT then there seems little reason to believe that any of us will honestly hear or be heard by those who stand apart from us. As Herbert Spencer wrote, "In proportion as we love truth more and victory less, we shall become anxious to know what it is which leads our opponents to think as they do." I don't see how we can move forward in any meaningful manner without such a mindset, and liberating one as well, I might add. The liberated mind, afterall, does not advocate; creed holds no sway. In the end, all are well-served to speak honestly, completely, and decently, even if in disagreement. As for Tim King... I think someone needs a hug.

I am not a supporter of the current administration. I registered to vote and voted in the last presidential election, for the first time in my life, against George Bush. I am 58 years old. Attack tirades from both sides will diminish when the ballot includes a no column and the highest net yes wins. No longer will A attacking B be able to assume the voter will vote for A if convinced B is a scoundrel. The result would be a more honest reflection of voter sentiment and the winner would know if they won with support or just by default because the other got more no votes. And the campaign would be much more positive since negative attacks wouldn't produce yes votes. Winning isn't everything if you can't do anything with it since you have little or no support. Well Dave, you too need to reexamine your debate; Al Franken is not a vile comedian, he and I spent time together last winter in Afghanistan when he flew in for a USO show, in the war theater- and he had just arrived from Iraq. I agree in part with what you said, and i believe you are well intended, but you can not compare the reach and impact and potential liability of Coulter's words with Maher, and Franken is not even in the mix you refer to. The day before he arrived in Kabul a friend of mine who is extremely conservative, asked if, "I thought the soldiers were making snowballs with rocks in the middle to throw at that liberal?" I told my friend that I didn't see any of his Limbaugh/O'Reilly types there, in fact I don't think either of those two have covered a war, (somebody correct me if I am wrong.) But at least Al Franken has the guts to go support and visit soldiers in a war, it is not a simple or easy thing to do.

Actually Bill Maher started this "crap" as you call it when he advocated the assination of Vice Pres Cheney.
