Nobody Injured in Crash on I-5 in Salem

(SALEM, Ore. ) - No one was injured Monday morning in a multiple vehicle crash northbound Interstate 5 north of Kuebler Road interchange in south Salem. The crash closed the northbound lanes for nearly 3 hours.

According to Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Jim Ragon, at about 8:50 a.m. a black 1996 GMC pickup was northbound near milepost 262 when it ran out of gas in the construction zone. The operator of a commercial truck was unable to stop in time and ran into the back of the pickup. A second commercial truck following both vehicles also was unable to stop and ran into the back of the semi-trailer.

The pickup's driver stated he tried to move over to the barrier wall and activate his emergency lights when he saw the commercial truck attempting to stop before it hit his pick-up and then jack-knifed into the eastside barrier wall.

The first commercial truck driver said there were three cars beside him in the left lane and he had no other option than to try to stop. He was unable to stop in time and hit the pickup then jack-knifed when the other commercial truck hit the back of his trailer.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Salem Area Command office are completing the investigation. No citations were issued. ODOT, Salem Fire Department, and a construction crew working in the area assisted at the scene.
