(MONMOUTH) - The Western Oregon University Federation of Teachers has unanimously voted to set a teachers strike date of April 5th.

The decision followed a lengthy and very serious discussion of the possible ramifications of such a dramatic and unprecedented action.

At Monday's mediation session, the union offered a significant compromise on salary but WOU management refused to move off of their final offer.

Both sides agreed that the difference between WOUFT's compromise offer and WOU management's position was approximately $200,000 for the biennium.

Union leaders said that their decision was not an easy position to take and was made with the best interests of students and faculty in mind.

Negotiations between the two sides have not have ended.

The Employment Relations Board has scheduled another mediation session for Friday morning.
