(SALEM, Ore.) - Army Pfc. Erin L. McLyman of Federal Way, Washington, died March 13 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked her base with mortar fire.

She was assigned to the 296th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lews-McChord, Washington.

This is a story in honor of her sacrifice. As a reporter I spent a few weeks around Balad and I recall the base nickname 'Mortaritaville' and how that raised eyebrows as a matter of discussion.

I was part of the Medical Team that worked that day when she came in here at Arrowhead ER, Joint Base Balad, Iraq. She left the ER as honorable as one could possibly leave, drapped in the Stars and Stripes, after a very solemn ceremony. We were proud to have been a part of her life. We were very sad to see her leave.
