(SALEM, Ore.) - On Saturday local Greenpeace staff announced the start of a campaign to work with community members who are concerned about the threat global warming poses to Oregon’s environment and way-of-life by registering volunteers at a community event.

Senior energy analyst Christopher Dymond of Oregon Department of Energy talked about the local benefits of renewable energy and Greenpeace organizer Sofia Gidlund spoke of the goals of the campaign.

Local writer Geronimo Tagatac read a short story by local student Deirdre McAteer about the world overcoming global warming. Over 50 local community members attended the event at Salem Public Library.

“The people of northwestern Oregon understand that global warming cannot be ignored any longer and we are joining together to make sure our candidates for Congress listen to us and develop a good plan for how to tackle this issue,” said Andy Rieder, a local volunteer with Greenpeace.

At the event attendees generated over 50 letters and photos to the congressional candidates and picked up yard-signs to place around Salem. The grassroots effort coincides with the congressional race between Democrat Kurt Schrader and Republican Mike Erickson, which is anticipated to be one of the most hotly contested congressional races in the country.

“The people of Oregon are rising to the challenge presented by global warming—they are driving less, changing their light bulbs, and buying more efficient appliances,” said Greenpeace organizer Sofia Gidlund.

“The question we’ll be asking the candidates for Congress from now until the election is: ‘What will you do if you get to Washington?’”

Greenpeace is calling on Congress to end global warming by:

- Increasing our energy efficiency;

- Putting a limit on global warming pollution;

- Investing in clean, renewable energy like wind and solar instead of coal and nuclear

In simple terms, what does consuming less and controlling pollution have to do with the fact that the sun is getting hotter and the ice caps on Mars are melting? What does that have to do with this new insidious term "Global Warming"? Why do we need a new tax? Why not just deal with pollution as we have been. I was a kid during Lady Byrd Johnson's "Keep America Beautiful Campaign". There was no tax. Moral suasion was very powerful.

Andy, No one is saying that we should not for aesthetic reasons or quality of life reasons control pollution in any form. This is far differnt than cloaking a global carbon tax to fund one world government. Global warming is a fraud. Dirty air and garbage is a reality that can be dealt with. The two are apples and oranges. I do not like dirty air and an unkempt environment. I do dislike disinformation for a hidden agenda and global warming is just that. The sun is getting hotter. Your S.U.V. has nothing to do with that and we certainly do not need a fraudulent Carbon Tax. Al Gore knows this yet he is a globalist and a fraud himself. It is hard for the average person to realize that the higher up you go the dirtier and more creative the games of control and money diversion get. Machiavellian tactics are constantly used by the people who feel they are not part of the masses and the masses eat the tricks of the elite because they are basically trusting and fearful of going against popular thought.

Albert: I agree with you that people in China and India are probably not joining the bandwagon, but I would suggest that it is because they are not able to. As Americans we have the ability to make everyday choices such as consuming less and limiting pollution. Just because "they" may choose to kill off a species, does not mean that we should too. Because a volcano eruption emits dangerous gasses does not mean that we should. It is up to those who have choices to take the lead in reducing consumption and harmful pollutants.

About 78% of our atmosphere is Nitrogen, 20% oxygen, Argon is the next most abundant at less that 1%. Co2 is a trace gas in our atmosphere. Nitrogen can be economically farmed from the by cooling and condensing, as can Oxygen and even Argon. There is not enough Co2 in our atmosphere to harvest and it must be manufactured through other means.

Albert Marnell you are right on target, and more and more people are questioning this madness and the people behind it. As oil continues to rise, the politicans will want to keep their power, so I expect energy policies to start flowing soon.

Albert Marnell June 1, 2008 7:17 am (Pacific time)

Do you think that the people in China and India are on the bandwagon? I think not. Neither are the other developing nations. Furthermore we are loaded with oil even in Montana. Do you think that the other nations are trying to over-protect the environment so that they can supposedly hear a few more birdies sing? I think not. If we do not kill of a species, they will. Gee, we really need the dinosaurs back don't we? Besides it will never get that far here but elsewhere the U.S. and Multinationals are having a field day. Other governments allow them to kill, kill, kill. We do not even care about people...Iraq is a classic example...are you going to worry about a friggin whale? I will gladly have a whale sandwich for dinner. Give me cheap oil! What good is a overly sanitized environment if you can not afford to eat properly?

Global Warming is a Fraud. The Globalists are using environmentalism to cloak the Global Carbon Tax because the more intelligent people fall for that crap. One volcanic eruption like Mt. St. Helens puts more gases into the air and does more destruction than man does in one year. If you do not agree, argue with my old Geology Professor from Australia. Don't argue with me. Besides David Rothchild is already making money on books that brainwash children. He is just like his money changing crooked ancestors. The Family Name was Bauer then it was changed to Rotschild...Redshield in German. In the U.S. we say Rothchild. The Carbon Tax is to be used to fund one world government. David Rockefeller is behind this as he was behind the Womens' Lib movement which was not to liberate women. Even Gloria Steinem acknowledges that she was funded by the C.I.A. The purpose of Women's Lib for the creators of the concept did it not for altruistic reasons but so that the global bankers could suck more taxes out of more people and also to take children away from the influence of their parents so that the system could more easily indoctrinate them.
