(DUNEE, Ore.) - An 89-year old man was struck by a motor vehicle in the 1300 block of East Fulton Street, near Friendsview Manor, a local retirement community. It happened shortly after 7:00 PM Monday according to the Newberg-Dundee Police Department. The injured pedestrian, 89-year old Elvett H. Brown, is a resident of Friendsview Manor. He was walking northbound across Fulton, near his home, and was a few steps away from the curb when he was struck by an eastbound white 1998 Ford Windstar van, driven by 48-year old David Andrew Ticknor of Newberg.

Mr. Brown was flown from the crash scene to the Oregon Health and Sciences University Hospital by LifeFlight air ambulance. His condition is not known but reportedly suffered several injuries. Assisting were paramedics and firefighters from the Newberg Fire Department.

Mr. Ticknor was not injured. He was alone in his car. Police say Mr. Brown was not in a marked crosswalk and reportedly wearing darker colored clothing when he was struck.

Although no speed is available, the initial investigation shows speed is not a factor in the crash. Impairment is not a factor for either men.

Fulton Street, a posted 25 mph zone, is a two-way, two-lane collector street between N. Villa and N. Meridian streets, two primary residential streets in the neighborhood. The public street divides portions of the George Fox University athletic fields and Friendsview Manor properties.

The investigation is continuing.

If at an intersection then it is always a crosswalk whether marked or not. So few drivers read the manual to know about unmarked crosswalks. And folks are not by law, nor should they be, required to wear day-glow clothing. Drivers are the ones operating the multi-ton death machines so the primary responsibility should be on them to always operate it safely for themselves and those around them. The article did not mention if the pedestrian was jaywalking but if he was cite him for that but IMHO that would not remove responsibility from the driver for colliding with the man unless the situation was that avoiding the collision would have been patently impossible. I expect many drivers will voice disagreement with me on this but it is their right to be wrong I guess. Ah well...

Editor: Special thanks to Mike for clarifying that this man lived in Newberg, not Dundee as we stated earlier.
