Elderly Rickreall Man Killed in Friday Morning Crash

Oregon State Police troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation.

(DALLAS, Ore.) - An elderly Rickreall-area man died and two other people were injured Friday morning during a two-vehicle crash on Highway 223 at the intersection with Rickreall Road about three miles east of Dallas. Police say that at approximately 8:00 AM, a 2000 Ford Focus driven by 81-year old Patrick Mason Shellito of Rickreall, was stopped on Rickreall Road at a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 223.

Investigators say the Ford attempted to turn left onto westbound Highway 223 when it pulled in front of an eastbound 1995 Mazda pickup driven by 31-year old John A. Cooper of Dallas, and was struck in the driver's side.

Mr. Shellito was using safety restraints and was pronounced deceased at the scene. His car's airbags deployed in the crash.

His passenger was his wife, 89-year old Imogene Shellito was using safety restraints and received non-life threatening injuries. She was transported by ambulance to Salem Hospital.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Polk County Sheriff's Office, ODOT, and Dallas Fire Department assisted at the scene. Highway 223 was closed about three hours.
