(PORTLAND, Ore.) - We reported yesterday that Portland Police Officers responded to the area of 136th and Division around 3:45 p.m. on a report that a man in the area had possibly attempted to grab a child.

Detectives with Portland Police say they are continuing their investigation into athe incident reported yesterday, but they have determined that there are conflicting statements from witnesses at the scene, according to Det. Mary Wheat with Portland Police.

"Investigators believe that there was a child at the scene of this incident but do not believe an attempt kidnapping occurred."

She says investigators worked with school police throughout the day in an effort to locate the girl involved but could not identify her.

On Wednesday afternoon, police interviewed two citizens who stated they witnessed a man attempting to grab a girl walking in the area and that the man attempted to chase her. The two citizens said they intervened, and the girl ran off.

The male suspect reportedly fled the area and officers began an immediate search and located the man that witnesses stated was involved. He was taken into custody to be interviewed by detectives.

The girl is described as being approximately 12 years old, 5 feet tall, thin, with light brown hair that hangs straight to her shoulder. She was seen wearing tan pants, a dark colored jacket and was carrying a pink backpack. The male suspect that detectives are interviewing is a 35-year-old white male.

Detectives say they would still like to identify the girl and interview her if possible and anyone with information about this incident is asked to call detectives at 503-823-0407.
