(SALEM) - Southbound Interstate 5 between Mission Street/N. Santiam Highway and Kuebler Boulevard will be closed until about 6:00 PM this evening, while crews work on a fiber optic line that runs under the freeway, and then repave the road surface. State highway officials extended the closure to 6:00 PM late this afternoon.

Southbound motorists should expect heavy traffic and short delays all afternoon long in this area.

Alternate routes for local Salem-area traffic include Commercial Street and Cordon Road.

Slow down - better roads ahead: Oregon remains open for business as ODOT modernizes the state’s critical transportation lifelines.
