(COBURG, Ore. ) - A semi-truck fire on northbound Interstate 5 about 2 miles north of the Coburg Interchange (Exit 199) that closed both lanes of the freeway for about 45 minutes has been contained and extinguished.

The outside "slow" lane will remain closed for several more hours while a tow truck removes the burned trailer and truck.

The fire, which occurred at milepost 201, started at about 9:00 PM due to a brake line malfunction. The fire spread to the trailer, and partially consumed several pallets of sugar.

Oregon State Police and Coburg Fire arrived on scene and were able to put out the fire. A tow truck is enroute to remove the semi and trailer. That operation is expected to take several hours.

The slow lane of I-5 will remain closed until the semi and trailer are removed.

Although the fire closed both lanes of northbound I-5 until about 9:45 PM, the traffic back-up created by the closure has dissipated.

ODOT asks any drivers approaching this area to slow down and proceed with caution.
