Officer Involved Shooting in Tigard

Shooting investigation logo

(TIGARD, Ore.) - On Thursday, October 14, 2010 at approximately 5:30 pm, two Tigard Police Officers were completing a report while seated in their patrol vehicle. The vehicle was parked in a lot at the Washington Square Mall in Tigard near the Sears store.

The officers began to observe what appeared to be a "road-rage" incident whereby a suspect began to ram another vehicle. The officers quickly exited their patrol vehicle in efforts to contact the suspect. During their attempts, the suspect fled in his vehicle and while doing so, struck additional vehicles.

The officers began to pursue the suspect and another Tigard patrol vehicle had also joined the efforts to stop the suspect vehicle. The patrol vehicles were able to "box in" the suspect near the exit from Washington Square Rd as it leads onto Scholls Ferry Rd.

While a Tigard officer was attempting to approach the suspect vehicle, he was struck as the suspect vehicle attempted to elude officers once again. Another Tigard Officer discharged his service weapon in response to the suspect's attempts to use deadly force with his vehicle. The suspect, apparently unscathed, fled the area in his vehicle.

Other Tigard Officers were now in the area and pursued the suspect as it traveled a short distance on Scholls Ferry before turning southbound onto Hall Blvd. During the travels, the suspect had struck several vehicles and exhibited erratic driving. A Tigard officer was able to successfully apply a "pit" maneuver and ultimately bring the suspect vehicle to a stop near Oak St. on Hall Blvd.

The suspect was then taken into custody without further incident. The suspect was checked by medical personnel and required no further treatment. The Tigard Officer struck by the suspect vehicle earlier was checked and treated at the scene and did not require any hospitalization at the time.

The Washington County Major Crimes Team is investigating the officer involved shooting while the Washington County CART investigates the series of vehicle crashes involving the suspect. Investigators are asking if anyone witnessed any part of the series of incidents beginning in the parking lot near Sears at the Washington Square Mall or at the intersection of Washington Square Rd and Scholls Ferry Rd. to please contact the Tigard Police at 503-718-COPS (2677) or via email at : tips@tigard-or.gov
