Over a hundred have died and hundreds are missing.
(JAKARTA) - At 7:42 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on 25 October, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.7 occurred in southern Sumatera, Indonesia.
Experts say it was triggered by a 7.7-magnitude undersea quake that struck the Mentawai Islands late Monday, killing at least 113 people and leaving hundreds missing. At least eight of the missing according to reports, are from other nations.
The event leaves thousands without homes, and Indonesia was double hit by the eruption of the Mount Merapi volcano that erupted three times locals say. The quake sent people running for safe ground, reportedly choking on smoke, many among them burned severely.
To make matters even worse, sources report that the volatile volcano has been rumbling intermittently throughout Tuesday, with scientists warning of what they fear, could be a far more powerful eruption.
Tim reports that over 129 active volcanoes can be found across Indonesia's 17,500 islands.
