Coast Guard and Firefighters Respond to Boat Explosion Near Charleston, Oregon (VIDEO)

Coast Guard response boat crews work to extinguish a 21-foot boat after it exploded and caught fire near Charleston, Ore., Sept. 8, 2009. Two people aboard were rescued from the water and taken to the Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay, Oregon

(SEATTLE) - The Coast Guard and Charleston, Ore., Fire Department responded to a boat explosion and fire near the Charleston marina, Tuesday.

At approximately 2:00 p.m Coast Guard Station Coos Bay, Ore., received multiple reports of two people in the water after a 21-foot pleasure boat exploded near the Charleston marina.

Station Coos Bay launched two rescue boat crews to assist the Charleston Fire Department and multiple good Samaritans in the rescue of the two people from the water and to assist extinguishing the boat fire.

Coast Guard Group/Air Station North Bend, Ore., also launched a rescue helicopter crew to assist.

Due to the severe damage caused by the explosion and fire the boat sank. The sunken boat's location is outside of the channel and is not currently a hazard to navigation.

Local Emergency Medical Services transported the two people to the Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay. Their condition is unknown at this time.

The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time.
