Police Pursuit Ends With Arrest of Brooks ManSalem-News.comOfficers used spike strips to bring the chase to a close.
(SALEM) - A high speed police pursuit in Salem that began around 11:15 AM Thursday, ended with a pick up in a ditch and the driver, 26-year old Joshua Self of Brooks, behind bars facing several charges. Marion County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Kevin Rau says it began during a traffic stop on Clarmar Dr NE near Center St NE in Salem, when a Traffic Team deputy stopped a 1975 Tan Chevrolet pickup. Rau says that as the Deputy approached the truck to contact the driver, later identified as Self, he sped away and a pursuit ensued. Deputies and Salem Police followed the truck north on Lancaster Dr NE from Auburn Rd NE, eventually turning north on Portland Rd. Throughout the pursuit, Rau says several cars had to quickly move to the side of the road to avoid being hit by the truck driven by Self. On Portland Rd near Ramp St NE in Brooks, Officers performed a Police Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver which caused the truck to leave the roadway and come to a stop in a shallow ditch. Joshua Self was taken into custody without further incident. There were no apparent injuries or property damage to property other than the pick up truck. Self was taken to Salem Hospital to be examined, then booked at the Marion County Jail on charges of Reckless Driving, Attempt to Elude a Police Officer and Driving While Suspended. He was also arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for Possession of a Controlled Substance.
