(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Portland Police Officers responded to the 1600 Block of Northeast Going Street today at approximately 4:30 p.m., on a report of a shooting victim that was being transported to an area hospital.

When officers arrived, they were unable to locate a crime scene and eventually located a man at an area hospital who was making statements about being shot. Portland Police Detective Mary Wheat said.

"Officers went to the hospital and began interviewing the alleged victim, 19-year old Demarcus Vance, and determined that he had not been shot but had sustained a minor injury to his arm."

She says just prior to the report of the shooting, Northeast Precinct Officers had responded to a call of a theft where a suspect was seen running from the scene.

"During the investigation of both incidents, officers determined that the man at the hospital matched the description of the suspect seen running from the theft incident."

Northeast Precinct detectives were called to the scene to assist in the investigation and later determined that Demarcus Vance had stolen property from a building in the area of the 2200 Block of Northeast Going Street and had injured his arm while running away from witnesses. Vance was arrested and charged with one count of Theft in the Second Degree and was taken to the downtown Multnomah County Jail.
