(WEST SALEM) - A West Salem home received heavy damage in a fire Tuesday night. Gregory and Margrethe Gregg weren't home at 9:16 PM when a neighbor saw fire coming from their back deck. The neighbor called 9-11 and reported the fire at 1390 Elm Street NW.

Captain Ken Hedlund who was on the first fire engine to arrive on scene, "We had heavy fire involvement on the side of the house." Hedlund requested a second alarm. That was dispatched at 9:19 PM, bringing more fire apparatus and fire crews to the scene.

Investigators say fire spread to the interior of the structure, but firefighters were able to stop it before it could do any major damage. The Gregg's dogs escaped safely.

Two cats have not been found at this time, but firefighters believe they also escaped without injury.

The fire is currently under investigation and a damage estimate is currently unavailable.
