About Salem-News.com
****************************************************************************

Salem-News.com is proud to bring this veteran's section to our visitors.

There are many ways that we can serve you and will always improve and upgrade this special section. We are also very open to ideas, so never hesitate to email us to suggest ways that we can serve veterans even better: newsroom@salem-news.com

We are based in Salem, Oregon but this site is for all Oregonians and anyone else who can use the information. Our intention to serve all veterans and celebrate them at the same time. Categories: A.) Our Mission for Veterans B.) Benefits and Assistance C.) Articles and Information on PTSD D.) Military Services and Veterans Organizations E.) Military News from Salem-News.com F.) Military Advocacy Groups G.) Veteran's Message Board H.) Stories, Videos and Photos A.) Our Mission for Veterans Part of the reason we wish to serve this segment of society is because the two primary newsmen of Salem-News.com, veteran broadcast journalists Kevin Hays and Tim King, are both veterans. Hays is a disabled Desert Storm vet, King is a former Marine who spent the winter of 2006/07 covering the war in Afghanistan for Salem-News.com and KPTV Channel-12 News in Portland, Oregon. They are veterans who are very qualified to write about issues involving veterans. Another Salem-News.com writer who specializes in articles about PTSD is Doctor Phil Leveque, who was a WWII combat infantryman.

There are a number of areas that we will focus on, and we look forward to adding important categories over time. B.) Benefits and Assistance We respect military service and we believe that in many cases, veterans are not given full credit for the contributions they make to their nation. Often vets are not informed of changes in the VA's policies and advancements, others do not even realize that benefits do exist for them.

This section of Salem-News.com is dedicated to service members past and present. Our goal is to keep current and relevant information in front of active-duty military and veterans, to help them stay on top of the latest information.

"The Oregon National Guard has a long tradition and history dating back to 1843. The National Guard is found in both the United States Constitution and the Oregon Constitution. The tradition and history of the Oregon National Guard was grounded on the basis of its mission statement; “Ready force equipped and trained to respond to any contingency. When we are needed, we are there.” The Oregon Military Department’s purpose is to administer, house, equip and train the Oregon National Guard – a ready force to support the Governor during unrest or natural disaster and as a reserve force to the United States Air Force and the United States Army."

E.) Military News from Salem-News.com (This links to section comprised of stories with specific tags) F.) Military Advocacy Groups Gulf War Veterans Association

http://www.gulfwarvets.com

"The American Gulf War Veterans Association (AGWVA) was established with one goal in mind: To obtain treatment for those service members and their families who experience symptoms collectively known as the "Gulf War Illness". However, there is more to this issue than meets the eye. As this investigation into causation has now progressed into the arena of possible exposure to chemical and/or biological agents, radiation poisoning due to the use of depleted uranium and most disturbingly, the use of our fighting men and women as "Guinea Pigs" in medical experimentation, the AGWVA has now added a second goal: To obtain justice and compensation for all those affected by these illnesses. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Page

http://thewall-usa.com/

"The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall USA website is dedicated to honoring those who died in the Vietnam War. Since it first went on line in 1996 it has evolved into something more. It is now also a place of healing for those affected by one of the most divisive wars in our nation's history."

Vietnam Veterans Against The War

http://www.vvaw.org/contact/

"Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Inc. (VVAW) is a national veterans' organization that was founded in New York City in 1967 after six Vietnam vets marched together in a peace demonstration. Recently, American troops have been sent into combat in the Middle East for many of the same misguided reasons that were used to send us to Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, many veterans are still denied justice -- facing unemployment, discrimination, homelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder and other health problems."

Truth in Recruiting

Honest information you won’t hear from any military recruiter in America: Information for people wishing to get out of a Delayed Enlistment Program, Conscientious Objection, and advice for service members who are in UA/AWOL status. G.) Veteran's Message Board (Matt said this is a go) H.) Stories, Videos and Photos Another important aspect of this Salem-News.com service is to document Oregon military history. It is also highly important to feature stories on the military exploits of Oregon military units and specifically, the Oregonians who carried them out. Please contact us by e-mail if you know of a great story we should do, about a military person or event. Also advise us if you have a great story that you would like to contribute.
