PORTLAND - Matt McCollum’s balk with two outs in the eighth inning brough in the winning run of Concordia’s 6-5 victory over Linfield in a non-conference game Tuesday. The loss was Linfield’s third straight overall and brings the Wildcats’ record to 14-13 overall, 9-6 in Northwest Conference play. McCollum, brought on at the start of the eighth inning, issue a walk to Brennan Ingram and gave up a single to Sean Strachan. Both players moved into scoring position on Ryan Sussenguth’s ground out. Ingram scored when McCollum was called for balk. After falling behind 4-0 in the first three innings, Linfield closed the gap with four runs in the fourth. Brian Kerr drove in Stew Davis to start the rally. Then Don Bard hit a two-run single to center, and after a Caleb Kearns walk, Cory Ellis hit an RBI single to tie the game. There was an opportunity for more, but Kevin Mills flied out to center with the bases loaded. In the fifth inning, Linfield too the lead when pinch hitter Jordan Boustead singled and stole second. Rhett Fenton drove him in with a single to put the Wildcats on top. Cody Herrick hit an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to tie the score 5-5. Linfield was held to seven hits and no Wildcats player had more than one. Linfield used a different pitcher all eight innings and McCollum was charged with the loss. NEXT UP: Linfield returns to NWC play on Saturday with a doubleheader against Willamette at Roy Helser Field. The first game is scheduled for a noon start.
