Non-Conference Baseball: WOU Powers Past Bearcats, 13-3

KEIZER - Western Oregon pounded out 14 hits while six different pitchers combined to keep Willamette at bay as the Wolves topped the Bearcats 13-3 on Tuesday night at Volcanoes Stadium.

With the non-conference win, Western Oregon improved to 16-15 on the season, while Willamette dropped to 13-16 on the year. The victory was the fifth consecutive for the Wolves.

The Wolves jumped out on the Bearcats early, scoring two runs in the first on a two-run single by Kevin Corrigan, and then scored three in the second thanks in part to a two-run one-bagger by David Navarrete.

WOU then blew the game open in the sixth with four hits, one of them a three-run double by Joe McCormick.

Griffin Webb pitched the first four innings for Western Oregon and was nearly perfect, giving up only one hit and a walk.

The sophomore from Redmond was making just his third start of the season and picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the year.

While the Wolves were in double-digit hits in the game, and were helped by Bearcat pitching, who issued eight walks.

Bryan Stone, Roberto Reyes and Randy Summers had two hits each for the Wolves, while Colin Young led Willamette with a pair of doubles.

Western Oregon will return to Great Northwest Athletic Conference action this weekend, hosting Saint Martin’s in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday.

Willamette will travel to Linfield for a three-game set with the Wildcats this weekend.
