WCC Baseball: Toreros Hold Off Pilots in San Diego

San Diego holds Portland to three hits in a 7-1 win.

SAN DIEGO - Two San Diego pitchers combined to hold Portland to three hits as the Toreros defeated the Pilots 7-1 in a West Coast Conference baseball game on Saturday at Cunningham Stadium.

Portland’s lone run came in the top of the seventh, courtesy of a pinch-hit RBI by James Allan.

Portland drops to 14-19 overall on the season and 2-6 in the WCC. 21st-ranked San Diego improves to 28-13 and 6-2.

The Toreros touched Portland starter Given Kutz (4-4) for six runs in six innings. Kutz struck out seven and gave up eight hits. Junior reliever Chris Siegfried pitched the final two innings and allowed one run on three hits.

San Diego starter Josh Romanski (6-1) allowed just two UP hits in 8.0 innings. He struck out five and walked two. Reliever AJ Griffin pitched the ninth.

The Toreros tallied runs in the first, second and third innings to claim a 4-0 lead.

Shane Buschini had an RBI single in the first, Justin Snyder plated two with a double in the second and Logan Gelbrich knocked in a run with a single in the third.

The score was still 4-0 in the top of the seventh when the Pilots got on the board. After sophomore first baseman Chase Powell was plunked, Allan drilled a run-scoring double to center field.

San Diego responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and one more in the eighth.

The Toreros totaled 11 hits, while nether team committed an error. Snyder finished with three RBI’s for USD.

Freshman Clayton Shaw and senior Billy Krause had Portland’s other two hits.

The Pilots and Toreros are scheduled to play the series finale tomorrow at 1:00 PM.

Portland returns home next week to host the Washington Huskies at Joe Etzel Field on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
