Apr-16-2007 13:17NASCAR: Jeff Burton Repeats as Winner at Texas Motor SpeedwaySalem-News.com SPORTSMark Martin, Gordon, Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle, Martin Truex Jr., Juan Pablo Montoya, Denny Hamlin and David Stremme rounded out the top 10.
Fort Worth, TX - Jeff Burton ended the streak at Texas Motor Speedway as he became the first repeat winner in NEXTEL Cup action at "The Great American Speedway!" Burton, the inaugural winner at Texas Motor Speedway in 1997, closed in on the leaders in the final laps to score the victory in Sunday’s Samsung 500. The victory solidified Burton’s standing in the NEXTEL Cup standings as he leaves the Samsung 500 second in points, only eight points behind leader Jeff Gordon. "I’ll be honest, I feel like a guy who’s come back," Burton said. "I don’t know how to describe it. When we came here in 1997 and were able to win that race we were a fairly young race team. What Richard has given me an opportunity to do here and all the effort that Scott (Miller, crew chief) has put in I feel like I’m new at it again. My enthusiasm is as high as it’s ever been, my excitement is as high as it’s ever been and I hope that people look at me and say I can do it again." Runner-up finisher Matt Kenseth had a strong showing this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway as he won Saturday’s O’Reilly 300 NASCAR Busch Series race. "We were racing as hard as we could and still be clean, and so I really thought I had him (Burton)," Kenseth said. "Jeff’s smart and he had what he needed to. I did everything I could and I got beat." Mark Martin, Gordon, Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle, Martin Truex Jr., Juan Pablo Montoya, Denny Hamlin and David Stremme rounded out the top 10. Burton’s victory ended a 12-race streak of first-time winners in NEXTEL Cup competition at Texas Motor Speedway.
