PORTLAND - Matt Palmer turned in seven strong innings for his first win of the season, and the Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Portland Beavers 6-1 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.

Palmer (1-0), who took a no-decision in Fresno’s season-opening victory over the Beavers on April 5th, limited Portland to just one hit over the first six innings.

The right-hander issued two walks and struck out four to get his first win of the season.

Trailing 6-0, the Beavers (4-7) finally broke through against Palmer in the seventh, getting a leadoff homer from Royce Huffman.

Fred Lewis, Clay Timpner and Justin Knoedler each had two hits for the Grizzlies (7-4), while William Bergolla drove in two runs.

Portland starter Jack Cassel (0-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in four innings of work.

The Grizzlies got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first when Tomas De La Rosa and Timpner hit back-to-back RBI singles to center with two outs.

In the second, Knoedler singled, stole second and scored on a slicing double off the left field wall by Lewis, who later scored on Nate Schierholtz’s single to right.

Chad Santos and De La Rosa drew no-out walks to start the seventh; both scored on a single to left-center by Bergolla.

The Beavers conclude their series with Fresno in the first of five Art & Science of Baseball School Days on Monday.

First pitch is 11:05 AM, and gates open at 9:00 AM.
