PCSC: Vikings, Gaels Split Sunday

Portland State (18-26, 3-4 PCSC) will return to action Wednesday with a non-conference game at No. 10 Oregon Wednesday.

MORAGA, Calif. - Portland State and Saint Mary’s split a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Cottrell Field, with the Vikings winning game one 6-0 and the Gaels taking the nightcap 11-1 in six innings.

Saint Mary’s won the series 3-1 after sweeping Saturday’s twinbill.

Junior right-hander Mandy Hill (16-15) pitched a six- hit shutout, striking out seven in the Vikings’ game one victory.

In the nightcap, senior right-hander Kate Albaugh (6-3) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning en route to earning the decision for the Gaels.

Portland State (18-26, 3-4 PCSC) will return to action Wednesday with a non-conference game at No. 10 Oregon Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m,. at Howe Field. The Vikings will return to PCSC action with a four- game series next Saturday and Sunday at Loyola Marymount.

GAME 1: PORTLAND STATE 6, SAINT MARY’S (CA) 0

Portland State gave Hill all the run support she would need with a run in each of the first and second innings en route to the 6-0 win.

Junior left fielder Stephanie Bean and Hill both homered in the game.

Bean hit her fourth home run of the season with a lead-off shot in the bottom of the first inning, and Hill hit her 10th with a solo shot in the fifth to make it 4-0.

Bean, freshman catcher Brandi Scoggins and freshman DP Sammy Taylor all had two hits each. Taylor also collected two RBI.

Junior right-hander Megan Galloway was 2-for-3 to lead the Gaels at the plate.

Senior left-hander Lauren Gardner (5-4) allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits and one walk, while striking out one in five innings

GAME 2: SAINT MARY’S (CA) 11, PORTLAND STATE 1

Senior center fielder Kimi Daniel’s one-out double in the sixth inning was the only hit for the Vikings in game two, spoiling Albaugh’s no-hit bid.

Seven Gaels recorded two hits as Saint Mary’s pounded out 15 hits in the game.

Freshman right-hander Janice Damo (0-6) suffered the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks, in 4 1/3 innings.

The Gaels took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI double by Galloway. The Gaels would break the game open with four runs in the fifth and plated six runs in the sixth inning.
