Apr-16-2007 05:59GNAC Softball: Seattle Shuts Down Western Oregon, 3-0Salem-News.com SPORTSRedhawks win non-conference contest behind Martin.
MONMOUTH, Ore. - Seattle University pitcher Erin Martin tossed a shutout and her teammates broke open a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the seventh as the Redhawks topped Western Oregon 3-0 in a non-conference softball game on Sunday at the WOU Softball Field. Martin scattered six hits in the game and Katie Petersen drilled a two-out double to score two runs as the Redhawks rallied to take game three of the series. WOU won both games on Saturday (6-5, 8-1), which were both Great Northwest Athletic Conference counters. Today’s game was not a league game, but does figure into NCAA Division II west region ratings points. The Wolves, who are 9-1 in the GNAC, fell to 20-18 overall. Seattle is now 22-17 on the year (6-4 in the GNAC). Martin, who did not walk a batter and struck out four, worked her way out of a couple of jams to preserve the whitewash. In the Wolves first inning, Lindsay Dahl singled and worked her way to third base, but was stranded. WOU also had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, but couldn’t take advantage. Meanwhile, WOU’s Christina Cooke had given up just four hits and no runs through six innings. But in the seventh, she gave up a lead-off walk to Kelli Marek, who then moved to second on Amanda Nilles’ sacrifice bunt. After Cassie Cueto’s single moved Marek to third base, Tyler Sutherland threw her out at the plate on Katie Antich’s ground ball to shortstop. But Petersen, the next batter, brought Cueto and Antich home with a double over the centerfielder’s head. Megan MacIssac then added another run with a single to score Petersen. Antich had two hits for the No. 6 regionally-ranked Redhawks, as did MacIssac. No one had more than one hit for the Wolves. Western Oregon will continue a three-week homestand this coming week with doubleheaders on Thursday (Northwest Nazarene) and Central Washington (Friday and Saturday).
