MONMOUTH - Western Oregon pitching gave up a total of two earned runs, helping to drive the Wolves to a doubleheader sweep over Cal State Stanislaus in baseball action on Monday at the WOU Field, 5-1 and 8-3. The wins were the sixth and seventh consecutive for the Wolves, who improved to 27-13 on the season. WOU, tied for sixth in this week`s College Baseball Writer`s Association west region poll, have also won 16 of their last 18 contests. Cal State Stanislaus is ranked fourth in the updated poll, announced earlier today. Kevin Corrigan went 8.1 innings in the opener, scattering seven hits and fanning seven Warrior batters before giving way to Adam Hoffman in the ninth. Corrigan improved to 4-3 with the win. Nick Waechter moved to 8-0 on the year with the victory in the second game. The junior gave up just one earned run and allowed six hits in the seven-inning complete game win. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Waechter`s triumph also moved him to the top of WOU`s all-time win list, with 24 in his two-plus year career. The Roseburg native, now 24-9, passed Charlie Potucek, who had 23 wins from 1981-84.
Five different players had two hits each in the first game to support Corrigan—Boo Christenson, Aaron Sutton, Brent Mertens, Evan Krause and Paul Fisher. Both of Fisher`s hits were doubles, while Mertens had a pair of RBI. In the second game, WOU put four runs on the board in the second inning and added two more in the third to take the life out of the Warriors early. Fisher had a three-run double in the second stanza, while Matt Skundrick and Coubi Jiles had two hits each for WOU. Brett Gordon had two of CSUS`s hits in the first game, ditto for Chris LeBouef in the second game. AJ Valentine hit a solo home run for the Warriors in the second game, the only earned run off of Waechter and the only extra base hit for the visitors on the day. WOU will get back to Great Northwest Athletic Conference action this Friday and Saturday at home, hosting Northwest Nazarene.
