MONMOUTH - No. 1 regionally ranked Western Oregon swung hot bats on a warm afternoon, rolling to 12-4 and 19-3 baseball wins over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday afternoon at the WOU Field. The Wolves, who are now 20-2 in their last 22 games, improved to 31-13 on the season and to 13-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. NNU dropped to 16-22 overall and 6-8 in the GNAC. Western Oregon pounded out 22 hits in six innings of work in the second game, including four (4-5) for Josh McGowan and three each for Boo Christenson, Joe McCormick and Paul Fisher. All three were 3-for-3, with Fisher hitting a home run, driving in four runs and scoring all five times that he came up to bat. McGowan drove in five runs and had three doubles in the game. The Wolves scored in all six innings that they came up to bat. Nick Waechter picked up the win on the mound in the second game, improving to 9-0 on the season. The junior allowed seven hits in five innings of work, but did not walk a batter and struck out six. In the first game, the Wolves broke up a 7-4 game with five runs in the seventh inning on their way to the 12-4 victory. Catcher Jason Pohl went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles as part of WOU`s 14-hit attack. Travis Coursey, Coubi Jiles, Matt Skundrick, Whitney Wilson and Christenson all had two hits each, with Coursey hitting his fifth home run of the year. Kevin Corrigan got the win on the mound, moving to 5-3 on the year. Tyson Burkhart was the leading Crusader hitter on the day, going 4-for-7 with two RBI. Western Oregon will continue this long 20-game homestand with a four-game series next Saturday and Sunday against Central Washington.
