Apr-29-2006 18:32Women's Softball: Warriors Drop Pair to Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon, 4-3 & 8-5Salem-News.com SportsSenior Rachel Hiatt goes combined 5-for-8 with 3 RBIs, but Warriors fall in conference twin bill in La Grande.
LA GRANDE - Despite a combined 5-for-8 performance with 3 runs batted in by senior Rachel Hiatt of Sublimity, Corban`s softball team dropped a conference double header, 4-3 & 8-5, to the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon today at Pioneer Park.
Corban took an early 1-run lead in the 2nd inning when Hiatt led off with her team-leading second home run of the season.
Eastern Oregon quickly took the lead in the 3rd inning via 4 runs on 6 hits capped off by single through the right side by Tara Peerenboom that scored Leanne Foster from from second.
The Warriors attempted a come back in the 5th inning when Hiatt roped a 2-run double into center field that scored sophomores Megan Lamson of Medford and Lindsay Batey od Aloha.
Unfortunately for Corban, EOU`s starting pitcher Kelly West closed the door on an eventual come-from-behind win despite the Warriors putting runners at second and third in the final inning with two outs.
Hiatt went the distance for Corban, allowing 4 runs (all earned) on 12 hits, while fanning 3 Mountaineer batters. West pitched a complete game for Eastern Oregon and allowed 3 runs (all earned) on 8 hits, while striking out a game-high 4 Warrior hitters.
In the night cap, Eastern Oregon grabbed the early lead, 1-0, via a home run by Meghan Henderson in the 1st inning.
Corban took its only lead of the game in the 3rd inning when hometown sophomore Caylin Goss of La Grande laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored sophomore pinch runner Shelby Raichl of Astoria from third. The next batter – Lamson – reached on an error by EOU`s first baseman that allowed junior Ashley Holder of Fairbanks, Alaska to score on the error.
Eastern Oregon tied the game at 2-all in the bottom half of the inning when Foster executed a sacrifice bunt that scored Heather Tandberg from third.
