PCSC: Vikings, Hornets Split PCSC Twinbill Friday

PORTLAND - Junior right-hander Mandy Hill pitched a five-hit shutout to lead Portland State (16-20, 1-1 PCSC) to a 3-0 win in game one, while sophomore left fielder Rachel Miles’ three-run double broke a 2-2 tie and lifted Sacramento State (9-24, 1-1 PCSC) to a 5-3 win in the nightcap as the two teams split a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Erv Lind Stadium.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a twinbill Saturday at Erv Lind Stadium, scheduled for noon.

GAME 1: PORTLAND STATE 3, SACRAMENTO STATE 0

Hill (14-13) walked none and struck out four en route to the 3-0 shutout in game one.

Portland State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a one-out single by sophomore first baseman Jana Rae Slayton to score sophomore second baseman Jackie Heide, who reached on a lead-off walk.

The Vikings added two runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 3-0.

Sophomore shortstop Jamee Rauch led-off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior left fielder Stephanie Bean.

Senior Kimi Daniel then doubled down the left field line to score Rauch. Daniel would score a batter later on a wild pitch by senior right-hander Jennifer Fryou.

Fryou (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out three in suffering the loss.

Junior shortstop Amy Tompkins went 2-for-3 to lead Sacramento State at the plate.

NOTES:

Portland State improved to 11-0 when leading after four innings.

The Vikings recorded their third straight errorless game to match their longest such streak of the season.

GAME 2: SACRAMENTO STATE 5, PORTLAND STATE 3

Miles went 3-for-3 with three RBI, including a bases-clearing double with the bases loaded in the third inning to break a 2-2 tie.

Sophomore catcher Jamie Schloredt was also 2-for-3 and freshman designated player Andrea Sherrill was 2-for-3 as Sacramento State held a 9-7 advantage in hits.

Sophomore right-hander Kayla Meeks (5-9) struck out six in going the distance to earn the win.

Freshman right-hander Janice Damo (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks in three innings.

Portland State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single by Hill. Junior center fielder Hilary Johnson tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run single in the second.

The Vikings had the tying run at the plate in the seventh. Freshman catcher Brandi Scoggins and Hill opened the inning with back-to-back doubles to make it 5-3.

However, Meeks would retire the next three batters to close out the game.

Scoggins finished 3-for-4, and Hill was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

NOTES:

The loss snapped a 13-game home win streak in PCSC play for the Vikings.

Sacramento State was also the last PCSC team to beat the Vikings at Erv Lind Stadium, winning 5-2 in the final game of the 2005 series.

The three-hit game by Scoggins was her second of the season. She also went 3-for-3 against Long Beach State on March 24th.
