Apr-07-2007 22:15GNAC Baseball: Western Oregon Takes Two From Central WashingtonSalem-News.com SPORTSThe two teams will play again on Sunday, start time is noon.
ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Western Oregon used a nine-run inning in the first game and then rode home run power and the pitching of Mike Eisenhauer to claim the nightcap during a pair of baseball wins over Central Washington on Saturday at Tomlinson Field, 13-5 and 7-0.
With the victories, Western Oregon improved to 13-15 on the season and to 4-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Central Washington is now 15-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play. The two teams will play again on Sunday, start time is noon.
In the first game, the Wolves erupted for nine runs in the third inning and added two more in the fourth to take a 11-0 lead and provide more than enough run support for WOU starter Kevin Corrigan.
Coubi Jiles poked a double and a home run for the Wolves and drove in four runs in the opener. Corrigan went the distance on the mound, allowing only two runs through the first seven innings of play before the Wildcats picked up a run in the eighth and another in the ninth.
In game two, Tony Jones blasted a grand slam homer during a five-run first inning as the Wolves never trailed. David Navarette hit a solo shot to get things started earlier in the inning. WOU added to the homer parade when freshman Randy Summers hit his first collegiate round-tripper in the third inning.
While the long ball powered the offense, Eisenhauer was very effective on the mound in shutting out the Wildcats. He gave up just five hits, all singles, and did not walk a batter. The sophomore also struck out three.
Paul Fisher, Aaron Sutton and Brent Mertens all had two hits for WOU, who had 10 hits in the game.
