Aug-19-2006 03:23Gray Elevated to Ducks' Senior Associate ADSalem-News.com SPORTS
EUGENE - Gary Gray, who has overseen the areas of academics and compliance of NCAA and Pacific-10 Conference rules within the athletics department at the University of Oregon for the last 13 years, has been elevated to the position of senior associate athletics director at the school, according to Director of Athletics Bill Moos. Gray, who first joined the Ducks administration as assistant coordinator of academic services in 1984, has epitomized the emphasis that Oregon has placed on its academic progress of its athletes as he was promoted to assistant athletics director in 1990 and associate athletics director in 1997. He joins Renee Baumgartner as one of two of the department’s senior associate athletics directors directly under Moos. Although he assumes the title formerly held by Dave Heeke, who departed in January to become the director of athletics at Central Michigan, Gray will retain the responsibilities he has been in charge of, dating back to 1987. “The administration of academics and rules compliance is essential to the success and well being of any intercollegiate athletic program,” Moos stated. “In addition to rewarding Gary for 22 years of hard work and loyalty, the decision to establish his position as a senior associate clearly shows the importance of the areas he oversees.” The 54-year-old State Center, Iowa, native initiated his collegiate athletics administration career assisting with the building of the university’s athletics advising office and added the responsibilities as a liaison involving NCAA rules and regulations in 1993. Graduating with undergraduate and master’s degree from Western Illinois, he broke into the athletics profession working in the National Basketball Association and minor league baseball.
