Wolves Drop Two Games

Western Oregon is now 0-4 on the season, with all four losses coming to teams ranked in the NCAA Division II top 20.

LA JOLLA, Calif.) - Two teams that are predicted to go 1-2 in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association went 1-2 on Western Oregon on Friday at the UC San Diego volleyball invitational.

The Wolves lost to No. 6 nationally ranked Cal State LA in three games (30-18, 30-19, 30-27) in the morning, and then fell to No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino in the afternoon, 26-30, 30-21, 30-21, 30-27.

WOU will wrap up tournament play on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Cal State San Bernardino 3, Western Oregon 1

The Wolves topped the Coyotes in the first game (30-26) and pushed their CCAA opponents to the brink in game four, but it wasn't quite enough to get their first win of the season, falling to Cal State San Bernardino in four.

WOU jumped out to 8-4 and 10-6 leads in the first game, only to see CSUSB come back to tie the contest at 17-17. But the Wolves scored three straight points and would never trail again in stunning the Coyotes.

But the Coyotes broke a 6-6 tie in the second game and rolled to a 30-21 win, and broke out from a 17-17 tie in the third game to win by the same score. CSUSB scored eight of the final nine points to win the game.

The fourth game had nine ties by the teams got to 15-15, but the Coyotes then scored four straight points and WOU never got closer than two points after that.

Shakira Jenkins led WOU with 15 kills, and Katrina Johnson added 10. Claire Carpenter had 17 digs. Sharea Drawn led the Coyotes with 16 kills and Meghan Hass had 17 digs.

Cal State LA 3, Western Oregon 0

No. 6 ranked Cal State LA rolled to victories in games one and two, but had to rally frantically to make it a sweep over the Wolves on Friday morning.

The Golden Eagles led nearly from start to finish in cruising to victories in the first two games, winning 30-18 and 30-19. But the Wolves came up off the mat and jumped out to a quick lead in the third game, eventually climbing to a 22-14 advantage.

WOU still led at 25-17, but then the walls came crashing down. CSULA rallied to score eight of the next nine points to pull to within one point at 26-25. Western then broke the drought to move ahead by two (27-25), but the Golden Eagles scored the final five points of the match to wrap up the 30-27 game.

Ashley Hardwick led Cal State LA with 11 kills, 10 of them coming in the first two games.

Luana Calalcanti added nine kills and 17 digs.Hardwick also had three service aces.

Freshman Lisa Martini led WOU with 11 kills, while Katrina Johnson added 12 digs.
