Aug-09-2007 06:06Oregon State Announces Men's Basketball 2007-08 ScheduleSalem-News.com SPORTSDepending on the timing of when fall term is completed, C.J. Giles, the highly touted transfer from Kansas, should become eligible prior to one of those two games.
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men’s basketball team has finalized its 2007-08 schedule, and the home slate will feature six non-conference games followed by nine contests in what is shaping up to be one of the strongest Pacific-10 Conference seasons ever. “From a schedule standpoint, we will have the right level of challenge as we build and prepare for conference play,” sixth-year head coach Jay John said. “We start the season in Alaska with the Top of the World Classic. Those three-game events are wonderful in giving you an idea of where you are early in the season. Then we’ll have a few days to prepare for our first home games. That builds up to the Iowa State game and the Pac-10/Big 12 Challenge. “I like the schedule early because it will give us the right number of games, and the time in between games where we can work on things. We will have a team that will continue to improve and grow stronger as we go along. After finals, we’ve got a couple more games on the road and then back at home, and then we have a big challenge with the game in Baton Rouge against LSU. And that’s good, because when we begin Pac-10 play we start on the road at Arizona and Arizona State, so the idea of going into a venue full of rabid fans prior to that is good. I think it’s a good schedule to play, grow and teach.” The Beavers will play back-to-back Sunday exhibitions at legendary Gill Coliseum against Warner Pacific (Nov. 4) and Western Washington (Nov. 11), then will open the regular season at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. OSU will face Colorado State in the first round on Nov. 15, then will play either host Alaska-Fairbanks or Tennessee State on Nov. 17, followed by a third and final game on Nov. 18. OSU will finish the month of November by playing three straight home games against the likes of Idaho State (Nov. 23), Portland (Nov. 25) and Iowa State (Nov. 30). The game against the Cyclones is part of the first-ever Pac-10/Big 12 Challenge. The Beavers head to California for the next two games, as they’ll visit UC Davis on Dec. 7, followed by Cal State Bakersfield on Dec. 11. Depending on the timing of when fall term is completed, C.J. Giles, the highly touted transfer from Kansas, should become eligible prior to one of those two games. Three of the final four non-conference games are at home, beginning with meetings against Tennessee Tech on Dec. 16 and Northern Colorado on Dec. 19. After LSU visited Gill Coliseum last year, the Beavers will make their return trip to Baton Rouge, La., on Dec. 22. Non-conference play then wraps up back in Corvallis on Dec. 30 against Montana State. The New Year marks the start of the Pac-10 season, and the Beavers open on the road against Arizona and Arizona State (Jan. 3 & 5). The first home weekends for OSU are on Jan. 10 & 12 (Stanford and California) and Jan. 24 & 26 (USC and UCLA). The Beavers will play just two of their seven February games at home (Feb. 14 & 16 vs. Washington State and Washington). OSU finishes the regular season with three straight home games against Oregon (March 1), Arizona State (March 6) and Arizona (March 8). The Pac-10 Tournament, held at Staples Center in Los Angeles, will be held March 12-15. Dates are still subject to change, particularly as television schedules are announced. Game times will be determined at a later date. 2007-08 season ticket information will be sent out shortly. The full schedule is as follows: November: 4th vs. Warner Pacific (exhibition), 11th vs. Western Washington (exhibition), 15th-18th at Top of the World Classic, 23rd vs. Idaho State, 25th vs. Portland, 30th vs. Iowa State. December: 7th at UC Davis, 11th at Cal State Bakersfield, 16th vs. Tennessee Tech, 19th vs. Northern Colorado, 22nd at LSU, 30th vs. Montana State. January: 3rd at Arizona, 5th at Arizona State, 10th vs. Stanford, 12th vs. California, 17th at Washington, 19th at Washington State, 24th vs. USC, 26th vs. UCLA. February: 2nd at Oregon, 7th at California, 9th at Stanford, 14th vs. Washington State, 16th vs. Washington, 21st at UCLA, 23rd at USC. March: 1st vs. Oregon, 6th vs. Arizona State, 8th vs. Arizona, 12th-15th at Pac-10 Tournament.
